Visiting Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Park is an enjoyable experience on two levels. First, the expansive park grounds along the Brazos River provide a beautiful setting for picnicking, sightseeing and birdwatching. And secondly, the Star of the Republic Museum, Independence Hall and Barrington, the home of Texas' last president, offer the visitor a unique insight into the lives and times of the men who fought and won Texas' independence from Mexico.

Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Park lies just off Texas 105 between Brenham and Navasota. Visit the Directions page for a map and more detailed instructions.



George Bush Presidential Library

Like the other Presidential Libraries, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is also a research institution, totally integrated into the academic environment of Texas A&M University.

The Bush Library's collections include 38,000,000 pages of official and personal papers, 1,000,000 photographs, 2,500 hours of videotape, and 70,000 museum objects. These rich primary sources document George Bush's distinguished public career as congressman, Ambassador to the United Nations, Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office in China, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Vice-President, and President.

The Museum also contains a special section is dedicated to former First Lady Barbara Bush and a classroom designed specifically for students from kindergarten through high school.

The library is located on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas.

The San Jacinto Monument

The San Jacinto Monument is dedicated to the "Heroes of the Battle of San Jacinto and all others who contributed to the independence of Texas." The monument is a 570-foot shaft topped by a 34-foot star symbolizing the Lone Star Republic. The building incorporates a number of innovative engineering features not common during the period of its construction. The monument is listed as the tallest stone column memorial structure in the world, 15 feet taller than the Washington Monument in Washington, DC.

Take a pleasant drive in the country and visit the winery. You can tour the winery and taste their delicious wines. Visit their website for a list of their awards. They have a gift shop where you can find that "special" gift. Texas wines make great gifts!

Monastery Minature Horses


Monastery Minature Horses, in operation since 1981, is owned and operated by the Franciscan Poor Clare Nuns, a non-profit religious organization devoted to the contemplative life of prayer, penance, and union with God.


Contemplative nuns support themselves in a variety of ways, and along with the traditional altar bread work (supplying churches with communion wafers), the Poor Clares of Brenham, Texas express their creativity through ceramics and other arts and crafts sold in their Art Barn, and their (Franciscan) love and care of creation in their work with the miniature horses.
